Peter Kirk Basile, 58, of Crested Butte, Colorado, died unexpectedly on April 16, 2026. “Pete” was the eldest son of John and Kathleen Basile of Waitsfield. He was born in Orange, New Jersey, and lived his youth in Whippany, New Jersey. The Basile family enjoyed spending weekends and holidays in the Mad River Valley, where Pete and his three siblings developed their appreciation for nature and the outdoors, specifically skiing.
Pete attended grade school in Hanover Township, New Jersey, and high school at Delbarton School in Morristown, New Jersey. During his senior year at Delbarton, he first experienced western skiing during a class trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The experience shaped his trajectory! He went on to Boston College and graduated in 1989 with a B.A. degree in philosophy.
In the autumn after graduating, Pete headed west, hoping to work for the winter in the ski industry. A friend had preceded him to Crested Butte, and that became his destination. One might say his “destiny”, as it turned out, the town had instant appeal. The season became a year, then another, and eventually a lifetime of being part of a beautiful mountain-town community, surrounded by people whose values and lifestyles composed for him a good life.
Pete's 35-year employment history in Crested Butte began and ended on Elk Ave, the main street and heartbeat of town. Rather than work in Mt. Crested Butte for the nearby ski resort, he found his niche in the local food and beverage industry. Early on, he worked at the Idle Spur Steakhouse and Brewery. In the 1990's, he co-owned and operated the legendary bar, brewery, and music venue The Eldo. He was a salesperson for Artisan Rug Gallery for several years before making his work-home at the Secret Stash, where he was director of bar operations and tended bar for 13 years.
From 1991 until his passing, Pete hosted several radio shows at Crested Butte’s community radio station, KBUT, including the popular blues-rock show Luigi’s Blues Review, hosted by Pete’s Italian-American wise guy alter ego, Luigi. Pete’s love for music brought him to concerts and festivals far and wide, starting with his travels with the Grateful Dead in his teenage years and later to Telluride and New Orleans. In addition to being an active part of the KBUT radio community, Pete was involved in local softball, soccer, and pool leagues. He will be remembered for his welcoming presence, quick wit and abiding sense of humor.
Pete is survived by his mother Kathleen Kirk Basile and his siblings Andi, John, and Stephen. He was preceded in death by his father, John J. Basile Sr.
Close family and friends will celebrate Pete’s life on June 25, 2026, in Crested Butte. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Queen of Saints Church in Crested Butte at 10 a.m. Later that day, Pete’s Big Send takes place, a public celebration, honoring “a life lived fully, loudly, and with love,” with a second-line parade, potluck dinner, and two live bands.
