Georgianna Scott McDavid Garby, 85, passed away peacefully in her Fayston home on Thursday, December 7, 2006. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Charles. She is also survived by her daughter, Sandra Davis and her husband, Bruce, who now reside in Pawleys Island, S.C.; her son, Chuck Garby, and his wife, Dorothy, from Medford, Long Island, NY. In addition to her daughter and son, she is survived by four grandchildren, Scott Kilmer, and his wife Donna, Wayne Kilmer and his wife Angela, Caleb and Kathryn Garby; great-granddaughters Jamie Lynn Kilmer, Karissa and Heather Kilmer; and a great-great-granddaughter, Tyra Lynn Kilmer. She is also survived by two nephews, Charles Smith from Babylon, Long Island, NY, and George Preston of Mission Viejo, CA; and niece, Kathleen Gonzalez of Cathedral City, CA.
Georgianna Scott McDavid was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on April 5, 1921, the daughter of James Young McDavid and Agnes McGlinchey. "Georgie," as she was affectionately known, was predeceased by her sisters, Catherine, Mary and Agnes, and also by her brother, James. Georgie and her husband, Charlie, retired to Vermont from Boston in 1978. Prior to that time, they were longtime residents of College Point, New York. They first fell in love with the Vermont countryside when a good friend invited them to ski. They became a fixture at the guest house of Otto and Elsie Becker starting in 1964 to begin their love affair with skiing. They then had their own home built in 1969 within walking distance of "Glen Ellen." Georgie and Charlie continued to ski till the winter of 2004 at the tender ages of 83 and 87, respectively! Georgie was also a devotee of yoga and daily hiking.
Not only was Georgie a skiing enthusiast, but she and Charlie were avid motorcyclists. Georgie and Charlie, while living in College Point, were members of the Queensboro Motorcycle Club from 1938 to l978. From 1950 to 1951, she won a number of trophies and accumulated enough points to put her within the top 10 riders of the year in District 4 AMA. She drove her own Triumph 3T and she was a member of the Motor Maids of America. Upon moving to Vermont, they became members of the BMWROV (BMW Riders of Vermont) approximately 10 years ago. They began hosting a yearly road rally throughout the hillsides of Vermont seven years ago.
Georgie was an executive assistant at Pepsi Cola and, more recently, Eastern Airlines. Due to her association with Eastern Airlines, this enabled Georgie and her husband to travel the world over. Not only did she and her husband travel by plane but many times traveled cross country via motorhome or motorcycle. Georgie also volunteered her time at the Joslin Library.
Georgie was extremely excited the day she won the Mad River Canoe from the Howard Bank raffle. She loved to tell the story about the day she and Charlie went for a paddle with local friends, Frank and Barbara Covino. Georgie's canoe tipped over and due to the quick thinking of Frank, they were rescued. Her description of the incident was that we "popped up just like a cork." This was at the ripe young age of 82!
Georgie had a great love of animals. She was a great advocate for the care and feeding of all God's creatures, be it hummingbirds, raccoons, deer, stray cats and dogs, chipmunks and foxes to name a few. The greatest love was for her own two exquisite Ragdoll cats, Puss and Boots.
A special "thank you" to the Central Vermont Hospice for their loving care and kindness this past year. In lieu of flowers, a donation to this wonderful group of people in Georgie's name would be gratefully appreciated.
There was a brief memorial service held at the home of Georgie and Charlie on Saturday, December 9, 2006, at 2 p.m. attended by her entire family, her many beloved motorcycle and skiing friends, as well as those who knew her from the community.
