Janice Elwood Barnard, 80, died peacefully in her Waitsfield home surrounded by many family members on November 4, 2008. She was born May 25, 1928, to Gladys (Long) and Charles Elwood in Billerica, Massachusetts. She attended Howe High School and graduated from Chelmsford High School in 1946. She worked at Lawrence Manufacturing Company in Lowell as an office clerk until marrying her high school sweetheart Donald Barnard on September 10, 1949. While living in Billerica, they had three sons.

In 1957, they purchased the Perry Joslin farm on the Common Road where the two daughters were born. This is where Jan found her true home. She was a longtime member of the Eastern Star and the Waitsfield United Church of Christ where she sang in the choir for many years. Jan worked at Mehuron's Market from 1970 right up until her death. Jan also served as a volunteer dispatcher for the Mad River Valley Ambulance Service and was a Waitsfield Elementary School board member. Jan was a vibrant person who lived a strong and independent life. She was a dear friend and "Mother" figure to all who knew her. Jan was an ardent Red Sox fan from the age of 10.

Above all, Jan was a dedicated and loving mother and grandmother to her extended family upon whom she showered great amounts of love and attention. She taught them all how to live well, have fun, and appreciate the many joys of life. On a beautiful day in May, she celebrated her 80th birthday with extended family and friends. It was a remarkable day for a remarkable woman. She was predeceased by her son Edward in 1979, her husband Don in 1992, her sister Evelyn Butterfield in 1993 and her brother Robert Elwood in 1993.

Survivors include her brother Charles of Groton, MA, son Stephen, his wife Maureen and their children Eliza and Elliot of Hinesburg, son Thomas, his wife Rhonda and their son Tyler of Harding, PA, daughter Pam, her husband Rick and their children Charlotte and Rebecca of Waitsfield, and daughter Diana, her husband Bill and their children Ruby and Zaidie of Weybridge.
