Doris (Severance) Hicks, 83, of Bloomfield, CT, beloved wife of the late Richard T. Hicks, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, surrounded by her family at the home of her son in Sandy, Utah. Born in Syracuse, NY, on June 23, 1926, the daughter of Roscoe and Ruth (Ball) Severance, she graduated from Nottingham High School in Syracuse in 1943. 

After graduating from Smith College in Northampton, MA, in 1946 with a double major in physics and chemistry, Doris joined Pratt and Whitney where she tested jet engines in the wind tunnel. She met Richard Hicks at Pratt and Whitney and they were married in 1947. 

While raising her four children, she served as a tutor for homebound students in Bloomfield and was a dedicated volunteer, serving many years as president of the Greater Hartford Girl Scout Council. Doris worked for her son as property manager of the Brookhaven Condominiums in Manchester, CT, and later with her daughter at Play it Again Sports in West Hartford. 

Doris and her husband both loved skiing and were members of the Hartford Ski Club since the 1940s. She enjoyed sailing, reading, gardening, fishing, watching birds, playing the piano and doing crossword puzzles. Doris was an avid and enthusiastic fan of UConn basketball, the Boston Celtics and the Boston Red Sox. 

Most of all, Doris will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother who devoted her life to her family. She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Hicks and her husband Ray Thomas of Tariffville and Fayston, VT; three sons, Peter Hicks and his wife Rose Ho of Milton, MA, Douglas Hicks of Avon, and William Hicks and his wife Kimberly Keefer-Hicks of Sandy, UT; a brother, Richard Severance and his wife Louise of West Dover, Vermont, and Round Island, NY;  three grandsons, Lucas Hicks of Milton, MA, and Richard and Benjamin Hicks of Sandy, UT, and a step-granddaughter Danielle Thomas of Blacksburg, VA.
 
She was predeceased by her husband in 1990 and a brother, Robert Severance. The funeral service was held on Saturday, June 27, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, Windsor. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Bloomfield. Following the burial there will be a reception at the home of her daughter.
