Andrew Watson Stewart, 51, lifelong skier and instructor at the Mad River Glen ski area, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 16, 2012. Born in Boston, MA, on September 28, 1960, he was the son of Harriet (Misterly) Stewart and the late John “Jack” Stewart. On June 7, 1986, Andrew married the former Doreene Perry in Needham, MA.

Andrew was a graduate of Needham (MA) High School and continued his education at the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston where he studied mechanical engineering.

A lifelong contractor and carpenter, Andrew worked in the greater Boston area for several years and then following his marriage, he and Doreene moved to the Mad River Valley where they raised their boys and have made their home since. Andrew continued his vocation as a contractor and followed his heart and his love for skiing, becoming a ski instructor at the Mad River Glen ski area in Fayston, VT, where he had skied since his youth.

Andrew had many interests, all of which he enjoyed teaching and sharing with his wife and children. An avid skier, reader, sailor (having competed in the World Championship for Sunfish sailboats), road cyclist, golfer and water skier, he was happiest in his pursuit of all of these activities. His family lovingly remembers him for his great sense of humor, his affection for their rescue dogs and the joy and enthusiasm he felt with his boys and all that he shared with them.

Andrew is survived by his wife, Doreene Stewart of Fayston, VT; their sons, Austin Perry Stewart and Malcolm Watson Stewart, both of Fayston, VT; his mother, Harriet Stewart of Centerville, MA, and Warren, VT; four brothers and their families, Michael Stewart of Needham, MA, John Stewart and his wife Suzanne of Dudley, MA, and their children Cameron and Sydney, Richard Stewart and his wife Kristen of Dover, MA, and their children Ashley and Mallory, and Daniel Stewart and his wife Gina of Boston, MA, and their son Griffin; an aunt, Sally Stewart Bowles of Eden Prairie, MN, and Naples, FL; as well as cousins, Paula Maidl and Nancy Devine of MN.

A celebration of Andrew’s life will be held at the Round Barn Farm, 1661 East Warren Road, Waitsfield, VT, on Friday, February 24, 2012, at 2 p.m. Carpooling is encouraged.
