Parents in the Washington West Supervisory Union will be able to enroll their kindergarten through eighth-grade children in any of the schools in the newly unified school district.

The Harwood Unified Union School District (HUUSD) adopted F33-L Intra-District Choice in March. It allows students to attend Crossett Brook Middle School, Fayston Elementary School, Harwood Union Middle School, Moretown Elementary School, Thatcher Brook Primary School, Waitsfield Elementary School or Warren Elementary School beginning in the fall of 2017, regardless of the town of residence within the supervisory union.

Last year’s vote to merge early under Act 46 will lead to one unified district on July 1 with one budget and intra-district choice. There is no financial penalty, whereas previously there had been.

“We hope the flexibility that we are now able to provide in these years of ongoing declining enrollment statewide will attract and retain as many families as possible preK-12 to our communities,” said Washington West Supervisory Union Superintendent Brigid Nease.

Earlier this spring the HUUSD Board surveyed local parents about their preferences on which schools their children attend. The survey found that most families will continue having their kids attend the schools local to their homes. Our earlier survey clearly indicates most families intend to continue having their students attend their resident school. Parents who do plan to make a change for their child for fall 2017 from their resident school to another HUUSD school need to do two things:

Contact the building principal in the school they want their child to attend in the fall as soon as possible, but not later than June 21, 2017, so schools can adequately prepare. Phone numbers for the principals can be found at wwsu.org/contacts.php. Scroll down to the bottom of the page for school contacts. Complete the form found at www.wwsu.org/blog/huusd-school-choice-2017-2018.php and submit it to the principal at the new school. (The form is on the WWSU home page, www.wwsu.org.)

Bus transportation shall be made available where possible but is not guaranteed.
