The Harwood Union boys’ ski team placed fifth overall at the VPA state ski meet hosted by St. Johnsbury Academy atBurkeMountainon Monday, March 5. While the result was respectable, the team was positioned in the top three teams heading into the last run.

Jack O’Shea skied perhaps his personal best run ever in the GS to finish seventh overall. Teammates Brooks Curran, 12th, Colin McGlynn, 23rd, Jono Gross, 29th, Matt Crowell, 53rd, and Dillon Welch, 68th, placed the team in an outstanding third place for the event. O’Shea’s performance landed him a spot on theVermont team that will compete at the Eastern High School Championships this weekend atAttitashMountain in NH.

Through the first run of the slalom the team skied well, holding solid, and was set to perhaps ski to one of their best team finishes in years. Brooks Curran capped off a successful senior year with two solid runs and a 12th-place overall finish.  Jono Gross, 36th, Matt Crowell, 45th, Jack O’Shea, 47th, Colin McGlynn, 48th, and Alec McGlynn, 53rd, placed the team in eighth place for the event. Combining the two events the team slid back to fifth, but in the process they realized that on a given day, when they all perform at their peak, they can be one of the best teams in the state. It was an exciting day for all and anyone who follows ski racing knows it often is a matter of inches. A great effort by all.

This year’s team is top heavy with some outstanding seniors who will be missed next season. Jack O’Shea, Brooks Curran, Colin McGlynn, Dillon Welch and Amos Gaylord are all four-year members of the team. Jono Gross is a three-year member of the team. Their teammates wish them the best of luck in their future skiing and education careers.
