To The Editor:

I wanted to take a minute and show my support for Waitsfield Community Wastewater Project. The new system will protect the water quality of the Mad River, replace aging septic systems, and remove existing systems out of the flood plain. Also, by eliminating older systems, the new system will safeguard the water quality of any existing wells in the villages. This project, along with the recent bylaw updates, would aid in the expansion of housing options throughout Waitsfield Village and Irasville.

The project as proposed has all work being funded through state and federal grants and low interest loans, with no proposed impact to the municipal tax rate. Loans and operating costs would be covered by a fair user fee. If the town is unable to secure the grant funding needed to construct the system and make it affordable to its users, the project will not proceed.

I have been a member of the Development Review Board for over 20 years, and over those years have seen folks come in trying to expand, or improve their property in the village, but have been constrained by the location of their septic systems, and their wells. The new system would help those folks be able to improve their existing dwelling or property. It could also encourage more housing in Waitsfield Village and Irasville. Get out and vote on June 11 in support of the project; it’s a great way to clean up our beautiful river, and create a long-lasting sustainable Village District.
