Theodora Hanna is running as a write-in candidate for Waterbury's one-year unexpired term seat on the HUUSD school board.
"As a parent of two young children at Brookside, I care deeply about helping our district’s students get a rich education that prepares them for life beyond school. I’ve spent time volunteering in both of my children’s classrooms and have seen what an incredible job the Brookside teachers do, but also how stretched the school’s staff and resources are,” she said.
"Vermont towns like ours are facing a seemingly impossible situation right now, caught between rising property taxes and school budget cuts. I’m determined to dig into the challenge and help find solutions that work for our students and our community. I want to listen and learn as much as I can about what’s working in the schools and how we can better support our students, teachers, and staff, and I want to support advocacy at the state level so we get the resources we need,” she added.
Hanna spent eight years running a nonprofit helping folks with low incomes gain the computers, access, and training they needed to work, learn, and manage their health using the internet. During that time, she had to figure out how to make each dollar count and how best to serve all learners. "That’s the experience I can bring to the school board,” she noted.
"From years spent working with funders, board members, program participants, and other stakeholders, I know firsthand how critical it will be to communicate and collaborate with members of the school communities as well as residents of our towns who don’t currently have school-aged children but still play a vital role in supporting our district’s schools,” she explained.
