“Why not Fred?” is the burning question behind the classic Vermont comedy, Man with a Plan. Filmmaker John O’Brien will be on hand to provide answers when The Corner School Resource Center of Granville presents Man with a Plan as part of its free First Friday Film series on August 7.
Thirty years since the movie put Tunbridge on the map, its gentle humor and quirky characters still ring true. Fred Tuttle stars as himself, a 73-year-old dairy farmer with a burning desire to “spend a few years in the House” after so many years in the barn. Veteran actor Bill Blachly co-stars as the smooth incumbent congressman Tuttle is determined to defeat. Cameos by many of Fred’s neighbors like Edgar, Kermit, and Euclid, as well as his 95-year-old father Joe, create a nostalgic portrait of old-time Vermont wit and charm.
Granville is a bit of a homecoming for Man with a Plan. The soundtrack was recorded by Corner School president Roger Stauss at his farmhouse in Granville. And when Fred Tuttle actually won the Republican nomination in 1998, he came to Granville with his opponent, Senator Patrick Leahy, to publicly announce he was endorsing Leahy.
This family-friendly film event includes free popcorn and soft drinks. Doors open at 6:30 for the 7:00 screening. John O’Brien will introduce the film and answer questions afterwards.
