To The Editor:

How fortunate that the three children aged 14, 12, and 11 from the Mad River Path Adventure summer camp were found unharmed after being lost overnight in the Camel’s Hump wilderness area, especially in light of the wet and slippery conditions that were mentioned. It left me considering, the activity (30 minutes off trail for this age group without supervision?), the call for assistance timeline (90 minutes?), and how this could have happened with a one-to-three adult/child ratio as stated in the article. Then I wondered if the Mad River Path Adventure Camp sessions are run under the umbrella of the Mad River Path Association 501©3 or is it a private venture of the director. Does the current Mad River Path Board have oversight, supervision and liability responsibilities for the director and the Adventure Camps in this capacity or how is that handled?

Thankfully, tragedy was avoided for these children and their families and I imagine there are lessons learned for the three staff. As a longtime supporter of the work of the Mad River Path organization since its inception and experience as a nonprofit consultant and director I am curious to know more about how this tuition venture of the Mad River Path works within the organization.
