After nearly three decades under the ownership of Joe Podolak, Alpine Options, Warren – has a new owner. In June 2025, Podolak sold Alpine Options to Derek Raynes.
Raynes is not stepping into Alpine Options cold. Last winter, he worked under Podolak in the boot room, where he learned the art of fitting ski boots and running the shop.
Raynes’ first priority after taking ownership was to retain the shop’s longtime employees and leaders – 16-year employee Steve Kreindler, boot fitter Peter Englert, and eight-year employee Kelly Adair. “Continuity was critical,” Raynes said. “Steve and Kelly are local to the Mad River Valley and understand the business and our customers.
Though Podolak has moved on, Raynes says the influence of Joe and his daughter, Anya Podolak – will always be part of Alpine Options’ story. “It’s impossible to fill Joe’s and Anya’s shoes,” he said.
At Alpine Options, boot fitting has long been at the heart of its reputation. That tradition continues under Raynes. Veteran fitters Englert, Kreindler, and Chris Leake remain, along with newly-hired Devin Frye-O’Neill. Additionally, Pat McCue has joined the business as service manager. McCue, brings years of service experience and has stepped into a hybrid role that blends sales and service.
Alpine Options is rolling out expanded services this season, including seasonal maintenance packages for skis and an unlimited seasonal wax pass. The shop will also offer overnight tunes. These offerings reflect both the shop’s technical know-how and its commitment to making skiing easier and more enjoyable for locals and visitors alike.
“For local families, my vision is clear: I want every kid in The Valley who wants to ski to have safe equipment – skis, boots, bindings, poles, and a helmet,” Raynes said. “Alpine Options already works with the community to provide gear for kids in need, but I’m ready to do more. I encourage schools and ski clubs to reach out about seasonal lease arrangements and helmets, so no child misses out on the joy of skiing.”
“The program gives families an affordable way to keep their kids in safe, well-tuned, and properly fitted ski gear,” Raynes said.
To mark the transition, Alpine Options will host Alpine Fest on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at the shop. The celebration will include live music, seasonal food and drinks, and a chance to meet Raynes and the Alpine Options team. The event will be free of charge and open to the public.
“I hope people feel the positive energy around the shop and our team,” Raynes said. “We’re stoked to be here, serving customers in an industry we love. For returning customers, you’ll see everything you’ve come to expect – and then some. For new customers, I can’t wait to meet you and earn your business. Everyone in the community is welcome.”
For Raynes, Alpine Options is more than a business – it’s a way to invest in Vermont’s skiing culture.
