Green Mountain Valley School presents the classic Broadway musical “Annie” this month. This musical comedy combines grit, optimism, and a comic sensibility with a story that has captivated generations. Presented at GMVS’s Dave Gavett Theater, the show spotlights the talents of a cast of 53 GMVS students. The show opens October 22 at 6:30 p.m. with subsequent shows October 23, 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m.
Based on the comic strip by Harold Gray, “Annie” tells the story of a gutsy orphan whose eternal optimism helps lift a nation during the Great Depression. It features a masterful score by Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin – featuring songs like “Tomorrow,” “Hard-Knock Life,” “Little Girls,” and “Easy Street.”
Back for his fifth year, director/choreographer Nick Caycedo is a native Vermonter and NYC-based theater artist who brings a wealth of experience and creative imagination to each production. “Our show will feature a hard-knock ensemble of characters brought to life by our exceptional young student-athletes turned actors. Much like our students, Annie is scrappy, resilient, and unafraid of hard work and ambition! Celebrate the creativity and dedication of our student performers. You won’t want to miss this treasured annual tradition,” he said.
The annual theater production is a cherished and long-standing tradition at GMVS. Since 1978, the school has spared no effort in creating visually stunning and dynamic musicals. This year, audiences can expect imaginative choreography, innovative set designs, signature costumes, and a scene-stealing local dog turned actor.
"For years the GMVS musical has brought the MRV community together. We are excited to present a show for family audiences. At our Wednesday evening show, we welcome kids of all ages to take advantage of special seating in the front of the audience,” Caycedo said.
"We are incredibly proud of the dedication and talent displayed by our students throughout the rehearsal process," said Tracy Keller, head of school. "The theater program has been an integral part of the GMVS experience since the beginning, when Dave Gavett led our first production, “Godspell.” This year’s production of “Annie” will no doubt exemplify the excellence we strive for in all aspects of our programs.”
